June 15, 2007
(Information updated) After acquiring Paktel in February 2007, China Mobile has renamed this Pakistan subsidiary as CMPak and planned to invest US$400 million (incorrectly reported as US$4 million in last week's Asia Express newsletter) in expanding its GSM network. China Mobile is expected to apply GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution), PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy), and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) technologies in CMPak's network expansion. In addition, according to China Business News, equipment for this expansion project will be supplied by Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, which will cover northern Pakistan, and Ericsson, which will take care of the Sindh and Balochistan regions.
